All consultations with a doctor or nurse are arranged strictly by appointment only, except in an emergency. We want you to see the doctor of your choice but, in an emergency, this may not always be possible. An urgent appointment will always be available on the day with the duty doctor.

Monday— Thursday Improved Access ServiceAs of Monday 1st October we will be offering additional evening appointments for our patients. These are different to the appointments some surgeries in the South Devon and Torbay CCG area currently offer in the evenings. This is a requirement (known as Improved Access) where practices ensure that across the week Monday-Thursday that a practice in their area is open between 6pm-8pm. To access these appointments please continue to contact your registered practice.

As of the weekend commencing Friday 5th October 2018, we will also be offering weekend appointments situated in two central hub locations. The hub locations for our patients are Cricketfield Surgery, Newton Abbot, TQ12 2AS and Pembroke House Surgery, Paignton, TQ3 2EZ. They have been selected as the “weekend hubs” as they are considered the most suitably based surgeries geographically to serve 290,000 patients in the South Devon and Torbay area. As of the weekend commencing Friday 5th October 2018 this weekend service will begin to take place. The appointments offered are by pre-booked appointments by contacting your local surgery and booking ahead. Patients will be able to be seen by a healthcare professional during these extended hours, we will be offering appointment’s with a GP, Practice Nurse and Health Care Assistant .
This service is very different to the current out of hour’s service where patients contact 111 in an urgent/acute situation that cannot wait until their practice is open again on the Monday. For any acute illness please still continue to contact 111, this new service is just for pre-booked routine work and is not for acute/urgent/walk in situations.
Please note that as this contract is being delivered at scale across the locality, you will not necessarily be seen by a Clinician known to you from your practice.

To ensure that the Clinician you see has full access to your medical records, when you book your appointment the Administrator will ask you to consent to sharing your medical records. Once consent is gained the clinician seeing you on the day is the only person who will have access to your medical record, this consent is valid for 28 days from the appointment date. It is essential that consent is gained for you to be able to have the appointment. If you feel you do not wish to provide consent then it will not be suitable for you to book the appointment. Cricketfield Surgery:The surgery carpark is for staff only. However there is a public car park right next to the surgery. This car park does charge but it is free on Sundays.
Pembroke House Surgery: Outside the surgery there is street parking available. If there are no spaces there is a council car park directly opposite the surgery.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else. We now have a dedicated Cancellation Line at the surgery. Just call 01803862671 and choose option 1. Similarly, if the doctor refers you to a consultant and you no longer require the appointment, please inform the appropriate department at the hospital as soon as possible.
Our team of six nurses, four healthcare assistants (HCA) and a phlebotomist hold morning and afternoon/evening clinics from Monday to Friday 08:30 - 18:00. They provide a wide range of services including; immunisation and travel advice, blood testing, ECG’s, wound dressing, health checks, oral contraception, HRT checks, smears, ear syringing and smoking and dietary (healthy eating) advice and support. For routine visits, whilst every effort will be made to provide the doctor of your choice, this cannot be guaranteed. All emergency visits will be made by the duty doctor.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
You do not require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may however require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.
If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).
It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.
You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.
The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. With your employer's support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.

Leatside Surgery is a training practice and usually has a fully qualified doctor (registrar) working with us training to be a GP, whose previous experience has been gained mainly in hospital medicine. The registrar will see patients with Dr Watkins and/or Hossack, to start with, then on their own.
In addition we also provide training, on a four month rotational basis, for Foundation Year 2 doctors.

This Healthcare Organisation is working together with the University of Plymouth, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to host students to assist with their learning. You may be asked to talk to or be seen by a student either with the doctor or nurse or on their own. The student will introduce him or herself and ask to discuss your medical problem and examine you.
Students are supervised at all times by the placement supervisor and a health care professional, usually your doctor. Like qualified practitioners, the students guarantee your privacy and confidentiality. You may find helping students in their learning interesting and stimulating.
The students and the Faculty appreciate your contribution to the education of future doctors, dentists and physician associates. If you would like to make any comment or have further questions, please speak to a member of staff.
Do patients have to accept?If at any stage you DO NOT wish to be seen by the Medical student you may decline the offer. You DO NOT have to give a reason and your care will not be affected in any way.
For 2018-19 we will be having 7 students spend 4 weeks each with us in two-week blocks. They are:
Leatside Surgery is committed to providing a safe, comfortable environment where patients and staff can be confident that best practice is being followed at all times. The safety of everyone is of paramount importance.
All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultancy, examination or procedure where they feel one is required. The chaperone may be a family member or friend. On occasions you may prefer a formal chaperone to be present, i.e. a trained member of our staff.
Whenever possible we would ask you to make this request at the time of booking your appointment so that arrangements can be made and your appointment is not delayed in any way. When this is not possible we will endeavour to provide a formal chaperone at the time of your request. However, occasionally, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment.
Your healthcare professional may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations in accordance with our chaperone policy.
