Reception staff will not be carrying out medical triage, and the purpose of using set questions is not to reduce access to doctors. The structured questions they ask are specific to the reason for your clinical request, and they help ensure that the information is recorded accurately and consistently before it is passed to the clinical team.
What’s important is that every request is assessed by a GP, not by reception. The clinician decides what type of care is most appropriate, whether that’s a same-day appointment, a routine appointment, a call, or another form of support.
Using a standard script helps in three key ways:
1. Safety and fairness: Everyone is asked the same core questions relevant to their issue, so nothing important is missed.
2. Efficiency: It prevents patients from needing to repeat information and helps clinicians make quicker, better-informed decisions.
3. Accuracy: Asking questions linked to your specific problem ensures your request is described clearly for the clinical reviewer.
This process is not designed to reduce doctor contact, it’s designed to ensure that patients who need to see a doctor are seen promptly, and that no one is booked into an appointment unnecessarily when another type of support could help them sooner.
